Photobioreactor FMT 150

Photobioreactor FMT 150 features a unique combination of the cultivator and computer controlled monitoring device. It is primarily designed for modular and precise phototrophic cultivation of algae, cyanobacteria and bacteria. Light power and spectral composition as well as temperature and aeration gas composition can be set with high accuracy.

User defined cultivation conditions can be dynamically varied according to user-defined protocols. Continuous online monitoring of cultivation conditions and measured parameters is possible via the Photobioreactor control unit including a notebook with pre-installed software (since May 2015 BASIC or ADVANCED editions are offered). Light, temperature, gas composition, and culture medium regime can be programmed to oscillate with various amplitudes and frequencies with user-defined time steps from milliseconds to hours via the software or via the control unit. Continuous-flow turbidostatic cultivation can be used for the stabilization of the suspensions via optical density control. In addition, up to 7 peristaltic pumps for different chemostat or pH-stat cultivation control can be linked to the Photobioreactor FMT 150 for the highly precise control of cultivation conditions.

Growth of cultures is monitored by the integrated densitometer (OD 720 nm, 680 nm). Relative chlorophyll content of cultures can also be monitored continuously by the difference of optical densities at 680 and 720 nm. Instantaneous physiological state of the culture is measured by the Photosystem II quantum yield Fv/Fm.

The Photobioreactor FMT 150 has a flat-vessel design that enables uniform illumination over the whole culture. Small-scale Photobioreactors are currently manufactured in three versions differing in the volume of their cultivation vessels: 400 ml, 1000 ml and 3000 ml.

  • Standard panel is included in the Photobioreactor unit price.
    A customer can choose from two panel versions, in which each color is separately controllable:
    - White-Red panel: maximum intensity 1,500 µmol(photon)/m2.s (white 750 / red 750)
    - Blue-Red panel: maximum intensity 1,500 µmol(photon)/m2.s (blue 750 / red 750)
  • Light Upgraded panel is an option and must be ordered separately.
    A customer can choose from two basic versions, in which each color is separately controllable:
    - White-Red panel: maximum intensity 3,000 µmol(photon)/m2.s (white 1500 / red 1500)
    - Blue-Red panel: maximum intensity 3,000 µmol(photon)/m2.s (blue 1500 / red 1500)
  • Besides that, the following customized panels are offered (please inquire for their price).
    - White-Blue Standard: up to 1,500 µmol(photon)/m2.s
    - White-Blue with Light Upgrade: up to 3,000 µmol(photon)/m2.s

  • As an option, External Light Panel may be mounted to the Photobioreactor front part. This panel may be used to accommodate specific needs of different organisms or to increase light intensity (optional; various wavelengths available; offered in sigle-color or bi-color versions).
  • Illumination is software controlled and enables both static and fluctuating light regime.
  • Timing enables day / night cycles.

  • The new software is offered in two editions: BASIC or ADVANCED (optional).
  • Both versions must be provided with a license file, otherwise the software will not start (license is bound to hardware).

Optional Features and Accessories

Light Upgrade
To increase intensity of actinic light in the Photobioreactor. Maximum actinic light up to 3,000 µmol(photons)/m2.s (1,500 µmol(photons)/m2.s for each color).


Turbidostat Module
Includes Peristaltic Pump PP 500 and supporting control software. The module enables continuous-flow turbidostatic cultivation. In the basic setup, the Photobioreactor optical sensing unit monitors the optical density (OD 680, OD 720) of the culture. The Peristaltic Pump adds medium accordingly to keep the culture turbidity constant.


Chemostat Module
Includes two Peristaltic Pumps PP 500 and software supporting control software. One pump serves adding acid, the second pump adds base. In chemostat mode pH value of the cultivation media can be continuously adjusted as either acid or base is added to the cultivation vessel to keep pH level on defined level.


pH-Stat / Turbidostat Module
Includes Peristaltic Pump PP 550 with one gas valve and supporting control software. This module enables turbidostat mode cultivation with additional possibility of gas regulation - pH-stat management via changing CO2 flow rate (CO2 container not included).

PWM Pump (for Gas or Liquid)
PWM pump can be used for pumping liquid or gas into the cultivation cuvette; it can be regulated withing a range of 1-100 % of total output. The pump has diverse uses: (1) Controlled air bubbling in the cultivation vessel; (2) Single gas input into the vessel; (3) When connected to the vessel inlet and outlet, it can be used for suspension mixing (bubbling) in anaerobic conditions.


O2 Module
To measure concentration of dissolved O2 (includes the electronic module, sensor and cables).


O2Sensor
Supplementary sensor to O2 measuring module (without cable).


O2 Membrane Kit
O2 membrane kit for O2 probe. Includes: 4 membrane bodies, 1 O-ring set, 25 ml electrolyte.

Air Pump with Bubble Interruption Valve
Air pump for culture bubble stirring. Supplemented with a valve, which interrupts bubbling during single measurements, and thus allows for more precise readings.


Magnetic Stirrer V-200
Magnetic stirrer with 35 mm long (Ø 6 mm) Teflon-coated magnetic bar positioned in a vertical plane of the front glass panel inside the Photobioreactor. The speed of rotation is adjustable from 60 to 600 rpm (10 – 100 %) by the front panel of the control unit or by the PBR software. Its use is essential when the agitation by air or gas bubbles cannot be used, e.g. when the photosynthetic oxygen evolution or respiratory oxygen uptake are measured or when growing the culture anaerobically without gas supply. It can be also used to reduce cell sedimentation and clumping in addition to agitation by gas bubbling. It is highly recommended with use of the O2 probe and CO2 probes.


External Light Panel
To accommodate specific needs of different organisms or to increase illumination intensity. External light panel is offered in three versions: single color (E-1), single color with additional IR LEDs (E-2), and bicolor (E-3).


Supplementary Vessel (standard model)
Suitable for cultivation in the range of 18 - 50 °C. Made from stainless steel and glass, it includes the frame, lid and glass body. Manufactured in a 400 ml or 1000 ml version.


Supplementary Glass Part to Cultivation Vessel
Includes just the glass body (not the frame, bottom, or cover). Made of boiling glassware, thickness 3.3 mm. Delivered both for 400 ml and 1000 ml vessels.


Gasket Kit for Cultivation Vessel
Includes: 5 pcs Silicone gasket for vessel bottom part, 5 pcs Silicone gasket for vessel top part, 5 pcs Silicone O-ring 75/3, 15 pcs Silicone O-ring 16/2. Delivered both for 400 ml and 1000 ml vessels.


Enhanced Vessel
Suitable for cultivation in the range of 0 - 70 °C. Made from nickel-plated brass covered with ceramic layer. Manufactured in a 400 ml or 1000 ml version.


High-Precision Gas Mixing System GMS 150
The standard version GMS 150 includes two channels (channel 1 for Air-N2; channel 2 for CO2). Preferably it is intended for use with PSI Multi-Cultivators, small-volume Photobioreactors, large-volume Photobioreactors and Growth Chambers. High-precision GMS 150 can optionally hold up to four channels.


NEW! - Gas Mixing System GMS 150-MICRO
GMS 150-MICRO includes two channels (channel 1 for Air-N2; channel 2 for CO2); its maximum flow is 5L/min. Preferably it is intended for use with Multi-Cultivators and small-volume Photobioreactors. Optionally the system can hold up to four channels.


Gas Analyzing System GAS 150
Enables measuring CO2 at the cultivation vessel output. If connected to CO2 electrode, it also enables measuring CO2 in the cultivated suspension.


Spare Part Kit
Kit includes: bulk connection plastics 45pc, one-way valves 5pc, double-check valve 5pc, stainless bushing with silicone ring 2pc, rubber gasket 5pc, o-rings 5pc, silicone tubing 10 m.


Additional Protective Glasses
Radiation safety glasses protecting against excessive LED radiation – equipped with side cover and protective filters. One pair of glasses is provided with the device free of charge.


Shelf Unit
Heavy duty shelf unit can accommodate and organize the Photobioreactor with all necessary accessories.


Photobioreactor Control Unit with BASIC Software
Includes control unit (PC notebook ) + BASIC version software for Photobioreactor control, user-defined protocol writing, data collection and visualization in tables or graphs.

Photobioreactor FMT 150

Photobioreactors FMT 150/400 and FMT 150/1000 feature a unique combination of the cultivator and computer controlled monitoring device. FMT 150/400 and FMT 150/1000 differ in the capacity of their cultivation vessels - 400 ml and 1000 ml respectively. Both Photobioreactor models may be supplied with a number of useful accessories - sensors, stirrers, pumps, etc.


Multi-Cultivator MC 1000
